Construction of the new HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) Specialist Site at Teville Gate House in Worthing has reached completion and will be home to around 900 full time employees when they start to move in later this month.

Councillor Daniel Humphreys, Leader of Worthing Borough Council and Chairman of Greater Brighton, said:

“I’d like to congratulate the landowners, HMRC, construction contractors as well as officers at Worthing Borough and West Sussex County Council, who have worked together to bring this important project for the town to completion, despite all the challenges faced this past year.

“This is the first big step towards an exciting regeneration of Worthing Station Approach and we are delighted that spring 2021 brings us such a positive start for the town.”

Colin Casse, HMRC’s Director of Estates Locations Programme, said:

“Teville Gate House Ltd and their delivery partners have completed Teville Gate House to a very high standard, in the most challenging of circumstances. The Specialist Site will provide a flexible modern environment which can easily adapt and cater for any future changes to our working practices and ways of working. The central location will allow HMRC colleagues from across the Worthing area to enjoy working collaboratively in this stunning building. We look forward to welcoming them when the building opens.”

The new five-storey building includes 70,000 sq ft of Grade A office space which has been awarded a BREEAM rating of “Excellent,” demonstrating its green credentials, situated right by Worthing Station, and has been built by contractors McLaughlin & Harvey using BIM to ensure the most effective and efficient construction and onward management of the building.

John McGregor, director of Teville Gate House Ltd, owners of the site who managed the development and handed over the keys to HMRC, said:

“I particularly want to thank McLaughlin & Harvey who dealt with the pandemic as if they had experienced dozens of them and this was just another. They threw skill and resources at it whenever needed and the result was only a modest delay.

“We had brilliant co-operation from HMRC and the local authorities, helping us quickly create practical solutions to the challenges that Covid put in our way.”

Works started in July 2019 and the improvements to Station Approach are now fully funded and will be undertaken soon.

Conor McKenna, Contracts Manager, McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd, said:

“We are extremely proud to complete the building now and worked hard to adapt to every new challenge.

“We developed new operating procedures in line with Government guidelines and re-programmed work to address hold ups to our supply chain caused by Covid and have received very positive feedback on all aspects of our work.”

The design team for Teville Gate House includes Box Clever Consulting as development managers, MacConvilles as employers agent & quantity surveyors, CDA Architects, A10 Mechanical and Electrical, HOP Structural Engineers and ECE Planning Consultants.
