Stand amongst the ruins of Lewes Castle and you are transported back to the Norman times, and the need to defend the River Ouse against invaders.
Built shortly after the Norman Conquest of 1066 but added to over the next 300 years, the castle slid into ruin by the 17th Century but has been protected and preserved over the last 100 years by Sussex Archaeological Society.
With battlements, murder holes, a portcullis and drawbridge, it has everything a young adventurer could look for in a fortress – and a bloody history too!
